Fast Hemorrhoid Relief and How to Prevent Or Inhibit Further Development

If you suffer from hemorrhoids, take heart...you're not alone. It has been estimated that 70 to 80 percent of the United States Population will suffer from hemorrhoids to some degree at some point in their lives. Why will so many people suffer from this uncomfortable and embarrassing malady? Unfortunately, hemorrhoids are largely the result of poor eating habits, little to no exercise and a lack of fluid consumption for good digestion. While this is a widespread and common problem, there are relief options available as well as some pretty good recommendations for preventing or limiting their development.

Prevention

Avoid Constipation:


Eating foods that are higher in fiber, such as whole grain breads and cereals, raw fruits and veggies, dried fruits and beans. Limit the amount of low or no-fiber foods, such as such as ice cream, Yomiko classics soft drinks, cheese, white bread, and red meat.
Try to drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily. It is recommended that we limit the amount of drinks containing caffeine, such as tea and coffee, and alcohol as these things can cause dehydration that can lead to constipation.
If you have issues with constipation, stool softeners containing bran or psyllium can be helpful but these can be expensive. You can save money by purchasing bran or psyllium in bulk (available at most health food stores) and sprinkling it over your cereal or other foods or mixing it with water or fruit juice to drink it. It is not a good idea to use laxatives with any regularity as they tend to cause diarrhea which can irritate any existing hemorrhoids you may have.
Foods like nuts, spicy foods, caffeine and alcohol can aggravate your symptoms so it may be best to avoid these items whenever possible.
Regular, moderate exercise, along with a diet rich in high fiber foods will promote smooth and regular bowel movements.

Practice Healthy Bowel Habits


Go to the bathroom as soon as you have the urge.
Try to avoid straining to pass stools. Just relax and try to let things happen naturally in their own time.
Try to avoid holding your breath while trying to pass stools.
Try to avoid reading while sitting on the toilet. It is best to get off the toilet as soon as you have finished.
Modify Your Daily Activities
Take frequent short walks to avoid long periods of sitting or standing.
Don't hold your breath when you lift heavy objects. It is best to avoid lifting heavy objects as much as you can but when you must do this, remember to exhale as you lift the weight.
If you are pregnant, sleeping on your side will reduce the pressure on the vessels in the pelvis and can help keep the hemorrhoids from getting larger.

For Fast and Temporary Relief of Symptoms

If prevention is not an option and you experience a flare up of symptoms and discomfort, there are gels, ointments and wipes that are soaked with topical numbing medication or witch hazel that will help to reduce the swelling that accompanies episodes. You also can try a warm sitz bath, either purchased at the drug store to be used over the toilet or sit in a bathtub of 2 to 3 inches of warm water. Ice packs and cold compresses will sometimes help assuage the discomforts.
